Apprenticeship:
A Path to Mastery
Introduction
Art was never my forte in school. While my peers effortlessly wielded brushes and colors, I was more drawn to sports and academics. Yet, a twinge of envy would surface as I observed their creations materialize on canvas. Little did I anticipate that this envy would ignite a journey of self-discovery and mastery.
The turning point came when our teacher announced an art competition to take our work to Japan. Intrigued, I sought guidance from a senior art teacher, a neighbor of mine. His words resonated deeply, emphasizing the crucial role of intense focus in art. This insight and fascination for sketches and colors propelled me to commit to the craft fully.
I sketched and erased for days, sketching a farmer with his family and sacks of grain on a bullock cart headed out at dawn, striving for perfection in every stroke. Sometimes, I felt frustrated when my sketches didn’t turn out how I wanted them to. But I learned that precision in sketching lays the foundation for a masterpiece and that every stroke, even the imperfect ones, was a step towards mastery. I spent countless hours honing my skills, wholly immersed in the creative process. Months later, my painting won first prize at the city level and secured the top spot in the state competition.

Looking back at India’s history, we see teachers’ lasting and crucial role. Like the ancient sage Chanakya, modern-day educators continue this tradition by guiding and shaping minds, contributing to empowered communities and a better world.
In Eastern philosophy, Confucius emphasised the significant role of teachers in promoting harmony and prosperity in society. Therefore, teachers are unsung heroes whose influence shapes a brighter future for everyone.
However, the well-being of teachers is just as important as their work.
The lessons that I carry to this day:
- Intense Focus: I realized that true fulfillment comes from pursuing one’s passions with unwavering dedication rather than chasing monetary rewards.
- Humility: Embracing the role of a beginner allowed me to shed intellectual arrogance and approach learning with humility.
- Resilience: I learned to tune out external opinions and trust in my abilities, regardless of societal expectations or judgments.
My first experience with the essence of apprenticeship – the seamless integration of theory and practice guided by an experienced guide taught me that Apprenticeship is not just about learning a skill but about immersing oneself in a craft, understanding its nuances, and developing a deep appreciation for it. The concept of apprenticeship traces back to ancient civilizations, where individuals learned crafts and trades from seasoned artisans. Rooted in Latin, the word ‘apprenticeship’ embodies the spirit of continuous learning and growth.
I learned that true mastery is not attained overnight but through dedication, perseverance, and the guidance of wise mentors.
Today, as we work on developing apprentice lifestyle coaches at Urja Academy, we aim to bring that transformative power of apprenticeship. These coaches are learners first. They embrace the role of a beginner and understand the importance of intense focus, humility, and resilience in pursuing one’s passions. My experiences taught me to be a beginner and played a pivotal role in designing experiential learning at Urja Academy, developing mastery!
